How to File DIR-3 KYC — New 3-Year Rule, Due Date & Line-by-Line Guide
DIR-3 KYC is the identity verification that every individual holding a Director Identification Number (DIN) must complete with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs under Rule 12A of the Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Rules, 2014. From 31 March 2026 the way it works has changed significantly.
What changed on 31 March 2026
- The separate DIR-3 KYC e-form and the DIR-3 KYC Web service are merged into a single Form DIR-3 KYC Web. The old forms are no longer available.
- Filing is now once every three consecutive financial years, not every year.
- The due date moved from 30 September to 30 June of the year immediately following the third financial year.
- Change made by the Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Amendment Rules, 2025.
Who files, and by when
- You must verify your KYC if you held an approved DIN as on 31 March of the relevant year — whether or not you are currently a director, and including resigned directors who still hold a DIN, foreign nationals and independent directors.
- The three-year cycle is tied to the financial year your DIN was allotted, not to your last KYC filing.
- If your KYC was current up to FY 2025-26, your next KYC is due by 30 June 2028.
- If your DIN was allotted during FY 2025-26, your first KYC is due by 30 June 2029.
- A change of mobile number, email or address must still be reported within 30 days and does not reset the three-year cycle.
DIR-3 KYC Web field by field
- DIN — must be in Approved status.
- Name — exactly as per PAN for Indian nationals; first, middle and last name, no abbreviations. Also father's name.
- Date of birth — must match PAN.
- Nationality; whether a citizen of India; whether resident in India.
- Income-tax PAN — verified live against the Income-tax database; the name and date of birth must match. Mandatory for Indian nationals.
- Passport number — mandatory for foreign nationals.
- Personal mobile number — your own, verified by OTP; unique to your DIN.
- Personal email — your own, verified by OTP; unique to your DIN.
- Permanent residential address with PIN code and district, and the present address if different.
Attachments and certification
For a routine verification with no change in your particulars, there is no attachment and no professional certification — the OTP verification of your mobile and email is enough. For a first-time filing, a DIN reactivation, or any change of particulars, attach the proof of the changed particular, sign with your own DSC, and have the form certified by a Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary or Cost Accountant in whole-time practice.
Fee, and what happens if you miss it
The fee is nil if you file by the due date. If you miss it, the DIN is marked "Deactivated due to non-filing of DIR-3 KYC": you cannot act as a director or sign any company filing with that DIN, and MCA filings that need it are rejected, until you file DIR-3 KYC Web with a fee of Rs 5,000 to reactivate it.
