How this reckoner is built
- Structure from the official text. Section numbers, headings, chapters and omissions are taken from the consolidated Act on India Code, not from a third-party summary, so omitted sections are never shown as live.
- Explainers in plain English. 1 section has a full explainer so far, each checked against the Act’s text and dated. More are added in order of how often they are looked up; the rest link straight to the official text.
- Honest about what is unconfirmed. Where a fact could not be confirmed against an official source, the page leaves it out rather than guessing.
Frequently asked questions
How many sections does the Companies Act, 2013 have?
The Act as consolidated on India Code has 517 section numbers across 30 chapters: 470 numbered sections plus lettered ones added later (for example 3A, 10A, 76A, 129A, 417A, 446A, 446B, 454A and the Producer Company block 378A to 378ZU). 43 of them are now omitted.
Are omitted sections still shown?
Yes, each is flagged as omitted, with the date and the instrument that removed it where the consolidated text gives them. For example, the voluntary winding-up sections 304 to 323 and the sick-company sections 253 to 269 were omitted with effect from 15 November 2016 by the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016.
Is this the law as in force today?
Section numbers, headings and omissions come from the consolidated text on India Code, which carries amendments up to about 2020-21. Each explainer states the date it was reviewed. Always confirm a provision on India Code and the MCA website before relying on it, and note the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which is pending before a Joint Parliamentary Committee and is not yet law.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is general information to help you find and understand the right provision quickly. For a decision about your own company, speak to a company secretary or advocate.
