NIC Code for a Trading Company
For a general trading company the NIC-2008 code depends on wholesale (Division 46) vs retail (Division 47), and on the product. A company trading a broad basket of goods wholesale uses 46909; through e-commerce it is 46901.

Select up to three of these as your industrial sub‑classes in SPICe+ Part A, with one marked primary. Open any code in the full finder for the sample MOA object clause and related codes.

The most common trading mix-up in SPICe+ Part A is choosing a trading code when the company actually manufactures its own product — that is a Manufacturing code (Section C), not trading.
If the company genuinely buys and resells, a specific 46xx product code lowers resubmission risk versus the generic catch-all: textiles and fabric 46411, metals and metal ores 46620, metal/non-metal scrap 46699 (both seen on this firm’s own real filings, filed together for a scrap-trading company), and 46909 only when no single product line dominates. A pure retail shop is Division 47 (47190 for a general store). Import-export is still a Division 46/47 trading code — there is no separate “import-export” NIC code. MOA wording: “to carry on wholesale/retail trade, import, export and dealing in [product].”
Before you file
- The proposed company name and the MOA main‑objects clause should both be consistent with the NIC activity and description.
- You may list up to three NIC‑2008 five‑digit sub‑classes; mark one as primary. Real filings this firm has checked almost always carry 2–3, not one.
- Use NIC‑2008, not NIC‑2025 — MCA has not adopted NIC‑2025 for SPICe+ as of 2026.
- If a result above carries a regulator flag (RBI / SEBI / IRDAI) or an OPC caveat, resolve that before choosing your company type and filing.
FAQ
What is the NIC code for an import-export company?
Import and export is still trading, so it takes a Division 46/47 code — the specific sub-class for your main commodity, or 46909 if you trade a broad basket of goods. There is no separate import-export NIC code.
Wholesale or retail — which division do I choose?
Selling to other businesses or in bulk is wholesale (Division 46). Selling to end consumers, in a shop or online, is retail (Division 47). Choose by your main channel and list the other as a secondary activity.
What NIC code if the company trades several unrelated products?
Use 46909 ("other non-specialised wholesale trade") as primary and add up to two specific 46xx codes for the largest product lines as secondary activities.
